I was looking forward to reading this. So many people were raving about this but I find this short essay to be lacking in many things. It's a superficial look on feminism and highly exclusionary. It's basically the no-nutrient fastfood version of feminism. A superficial and mass-friendly version that has little to no substance. ... I was looking forward to reading this. So many people were raving about this but I find this short essay to be lacking in many things. It's a superficial look on feminism and highly exclusionary. It's basically the no-nutrient fastfood version of feminism. A superficial and mass-friendly version that has little to no substance. To make things worse, Adichie excludes large swathes of people in this text and on top of that, she uses sexist stereotypes to further the feminist cause by using ideas about biological determinism. Adichie uses exactly those harmful stereotypes that stiffle gender equality and liberation and presents sexist ideas as feminist facts, e.g. that women are born as caretakers and more sensitive and men are more naturally born violent and protective. On top of that, she confuses sex and gender, only using a binary system, and excludes any sexuality beyond heteronormative notions. There are better Black and African feminist intellectuals. This booklet is honestly an insult and is the pop-sugar, plastick-y, no substance feminism that actually harms the cause. Also, Adichie is proven to have plagiarised other feminist works, so...it's a big No from me.
