Beschreibung

Agatha Christie's classic short story collection, including one of her most enduring and shocking thrillers, The Witness for the Prosecution.

1920s London.

A murder, brutal and bloodthirsty, has stained the plush carpets of a handsome London townhouse. The victim is the glamorous and enormously rich Emily French. All the evidence points to Leonard Vole, a young chancer to whom the heiress left her vast fortune and who ruthlessly took her life. At least, this is the story that Emily's dedicated housekeeper Janet Mackenzie stands by in court. Leonard however, is adamant that his partner, the enigmatic chorus girl Romaine, can prove his innocence.

"With the long terrible shadow of the Great War falling across the rackety, feral 1920s, The Witness for the Prosecution is a compelling story of deceit, desire, murder, money and morality, innocence and guilt, heartbreak and most painful and dangerous of all, love. At the centre of this dark and tangled net is the astonishing character of Romaine, a noir heroine for all our times." Sarah Phelps

This was a treat!

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Two friends of mine have recommended Agatha Christie to me independently of each other. Naturally, I had to check her books out. "Unfortunately" I had watched the new 'Murder on the Orient Express' film before reading the book which took away some of the "shock value" in the end. Still, I LOVED this story very much! Her writing style is right up my alley, and I really vibe with her use of minimal description of places. Because even if there’s not much to go on, she writes the rest around it so well that you automatically picture the different settings and scenes. She knows what she writes (as this style wouldn’t work with Fantasy) and delivers beautifully! As I don’t want to spoiler anyone by giving away too much I’ll just say that I was AMAZED at the way she placed the snippets that later turned into evidence - which none of them I could’ve figured out (safe one, maybe). One thing that stood out in a less 'all positive' way was her use of stereotypes in regards to the different nationalities. BUT, I know that this was a different time then, it was a way of writing which people enjoyed, and it didn’t take away very much of my reading experience. Hence my 5-star rating. If you are a fan of the genre 'Mystery' then I heartily recommend this book. Even if you haven’t read any Mystery yet and are trying to dip your toes in I would say this story lends itself perfectly for that.
