Die 1920 in Oxford geborene Schriftstellerin war mit einem Arzt verheiratet und lange Zeit in der Krankenhausverwaltung tätig. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes arbeitete sie in der Kriminalabteilung des britischen Innenministeriums. Mit ihren Kriminalromanen erwarb sie sich international große Anerkennung.

James is one of the traditional British Crime Writers, so her spin-off to Pride and Prejudice got me hooked immediately - but what started off as a good crime story with long known characters got stuck in the middle. James made too much effort about period details such as elaborate jurisdiction - and the dialogue lacks Austen's charme and wit. Rather skipped to the end...
