Ich gehöre zu den "schlechten" menschen die zuerst den film gesehen haben und dann das buch. Also MEINE Lieblingsvariante ist und bleibt die Walt Disney Verfilmung.
Aber Alex Flinn´s Buch ist sowohl amüsant als auch tiefgründig. es ist interessant Kyle bei seiner 180° Wendung von Oberfiesling zum netten Beast von nebenan mitzuerleben. Im Grunde ist die Geschichte nichts neues, aber eine eine Empfehlung für die romatischen, märchenlieben Seelen unter uns.

Dieses Buch kann ich wirklich jedem empfehlen, der ein Fabel für Märchen hat. Es ist einfach geschrieben und - man kann es kaum glauben- spannend, obwohl man das Märchen kennt. Es ist schön zu sehen, wie Kyle sich während des Buches verändert, mit seinem Biest-Sein versucht klarzukommen. So kann man sich gut in ihn reinversezen. Ich würde das Buch immer wieder lesen! Vor allem da es nicht mit nervig langen Beschreibungen ablenkt, sondern einen klaren Handlungsstrang besitzt. Also:
Lest es bevor ihr es seht ! (wie es schön auf der Taschenbuchausgabe heißt, aber auch meine Meinung ;))

It was an OK.book. Actually, I was expecting something else. However, the main theme stays the same, it is the inner beauty that counts. The outside beauty fades away with time or can be lost in few second due to accidents or diseases.

- simply the best - version of the Beauty-and-the-Beast-tale so far (I've read Beauty by McKinley and Beast by Napoli before). Amazing, how Alex Flinn has woven all important aspects of the fairytale into a modern story that takes place in a Brooklyn Brownstone. I recommend it to fans of fairytale retellings and young adult love stories.

A little more information about the plot: Kyle Kingsbury is a beautiful, rich and conceited kid who abhorres ugly people - and things - and is even cruel to his rather homely classmates. He has learned this view on life from his self-centered father - a popular TV anchor of a nationwide channel. Kyle newest idea of fun is inviting Kendra, an unpopular goth girl, for to accompany him to the spring dance and walking out on her with the most beautiful girl in school on his arm.
It turns out that Kendra is a witch who decides to give Kyle a last chance. She turns him into a beast, but gives him two rose petals that stand for two years to learn to love and find someone to love him. Kyles father is afraid of the media learning of his son's change in looks and tucks him away with a housekeeper and a blind tutor in a remote house. Unter the guidace of tutor Will Kyle sets up a greenhouse full of roses. He broods a lot, watches his former so-called friend in an enchanted mirror given by Kendra and tries to find a girl on the internet. (The chat discussions he has with the frog prince, the silent mermaid and other fairytale creatures are very entertaining.) The story enfolds like we know it, but uses different places and contemporary means.
